We have all been through the itchy discomfort of prickly heat at some point. Unseemly bumps on your skin with tiny blisters that makes your day a whole lot worse. Prickly heat and heat rash occurs due to sweat glands that are blocked. The trapped sweat, which cannot reach the surface of the skin to evaporate, then gets inflamed, giving you tiny little blisters and reddish skin which we call heat rash or prickly heat.
Although it’s quite common, especially amongst people who live in tropical countries like Sri Lanka, it is still a very irritating and uncomfortable condition. But, with a few simple steps, you can avoid heat rash and prickly heat!
5 steps to prevent heat rash!
Wear it loose
Tight clothing that does not give your skin room to breathe or does not allow for air circulation is a main reason why heat rash occurs. Choose to wear loose clothes, specially in hot and humid climates. With plenty of room for air to circulate, the probability of heat rash outbreaks will be significantly lower.
Cotton to the rescue
Natural fibers such as cotton or even linen have sweat absorbent properties, as well as being fabrics that “breathe”. This means that the fabric will allow for air circulation and absorb your excess sweat, keeping your body cool and sweat glands unblocked.
Magic of Calamine lotion
This is especially effective if you are already suffering with heat rash and prickly heat. Applying calamine lotion will help soothe your skin, relieving you of the rash and the discomfort. When it’s especially hot and humid, be sure to keep yourself clean with frequent showers and baths. Heat rash generally disappears on its own when your body cools down. But, when it comes to heat rash, prevention is always better than cure. Its much easier to avoid the discomfort than to find a way to treat it. On hot and humid days, don’t forget to use a soft powder such as the Lacto Prickly Heat powder in areas that sweat a lot such as your under arms, and in places where the skin creases or where your clothes fit tightly.
