Learn by Burn: 8 Ways to Treat Sunburn at Home

A downside of living in a tropical paradise is the constant glaring UV rays of the sun. No two people burn the same way, still over exposure to the sun causes premature aging and changes in the DNA that in turn causes cancer, known as Melanoma. In mild forms, they can be easily treated at home but for serious cases like blisters, swelling and dizziness a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Home Remedies to Relieve Sunburn

  • A very mild and soothing treatment for sunburns is baby wipes since they balance the PH levels. Don’t over use them in any case as that may reduce the natural oils that assist the healing process.
  • The fats and proteins contained in milk are ideal for skin that has started to peel after sunburn. During this time hydrating the skin is important which will be done by milk. If you are averse to the smell of milk you can use milk based products as a substitute.
  • Tea, our special favorite is fantastic to treat sunburn. You have to brew a pot of green or black tea and allow it to cool for hours. Once the tea has cooled you can soak a soft towel in it and use as a compress on the affected areas.
  • The soft soothing gel in the Aloe-Vera plant will soothe the irritated skin.  If you don’t have access to a plant you can use aloe ointments, but make sure that they don’t contain lanolin as they can irritate your skin and worsen the condition.
  • The cooling compounds in cucumber will soothe irritated and burned skin. You have to simply cut some slices and gently rub on the affected areas.
  • The probiotics in plain yogurt works wonders that helps to restore the natural barrier of the skin. You have to apply the cold yogurt on the affected area and sit it for 10 minutes. You can then gently dab it off with a cold cloth.
  • Mayonnaise is known for its cooling effects. The soothing oil in it is ideal for instant relief. You have to directly apply onto the burn but keep in mind that it is not a remedy for sunburn.

These quick and easy remedies are readily available and what more they actually work. Having said that the best way to protect yourself is by using a sun lotion SPF 15 or higher and there is no reason to not enjoy the sun.

If you are someone who craves the warmth of the sun without thinking twice about applying anything outwardly then you might have to start rethinking about the potential harm that the rays of the sun might actually do to your skin. Many of us don’t feel the burn or rather do not bother about the need for applying a sun lotion for extra protection. Some of us instantly feel the burn and turn into a shade darker very quickly. But, regardless of complexion, we all need to consider the fact that sunburn can actually turn into something unpleasant overtime, such as melanoma and premature aging.

  • Know the effects

There are various types of sun lotions out there for use but before going about grabbing the first sun lotion bottle you spot, you should first do your research and choose the right SPF for your skin. Sunburn is the damage that is caused to your skin due to overexposure to ultraviolet or UV rays from the sun. The more severe it gets, the more you become prone to forms of swelling and blisters. It is one of those entities that stealthily causes you pain over time and paves way for other skin prone afflictions.

Protecting yourself from the sun doesn’t mean that you simply need to cover up and stay away from the sun completely. The Sun itself is a good source of Vitamin D so we need not deprive ourselves from the goodness of this heavenly body. But, however we expose ourselves to the sun, we need to adopt precautions in order to safeguard our skin from unfavourable skin conditions which might tend to occur in the future.

  • Know what you buy

Choosing the right SPF or ‘Sunburn Protection Factor’ is important if we are to ensure that the right formula works for the right skin type. An SPF is a measure that determines how efficiently a sun lotion works to block ultraviolet B or UVB rays from damaging your skin. A sun lotion with an SPF rating acts as a shield that eliminates UV photons from reaching our skin and causing any damage. This of course depends entirely on your skin type and how inclined it is to burn. The numbers applied represent an approximate measure of time a person who has applied sun lotion can stay out without getting burned.

In theory, you should be able to experience about 600 minutes or 10 hours, in the sun. But, this is not an exact estimation since the UV light that reaches us depends on a number of factors. The higher the SPF number, the stronger the shield power is and the longer one can stay out in the sun. So, if you opt for an SPF 50 sun lotion, you can expect more protection from both UVA and UVB radiation.

  • Know what to do

When applying sun lotion, do this roughly 30 minutes before you plan to go out in the sun. This is also bound to give you best results as it can be quickly absorbed by the skin and is less likely to wash off when perspiration begins to kick in.
