How to Keep Your Baby Safe From Heat Rash

මෙම ළිපිය සිංහලෙන් කියවන්න

When the sun is over the equator and the heat hits tropical countries like Sri Lanka, it’s the little babies who suffer the most. Their soft and sensitive skin with tiny sweat pores is not designed to bear up with the excessive sweat generated by the body to keep cool, and thus the sweat gets trapped under the skin. End result? An uncomfortable baby who is suffering with heat rash!

What does heat rash in babies look like?

If your baby’s skin has a lot of tiny bumps or blisters, which are sometimes red, its most definitely a heat rash. These conditions occur mostly in folds in your baby’s skin such as the neck and where the clothes are close to the skin such as chest and buttocks.

How can I avoid heat rash?

Babies find heat rash to be uncomfortable and annoying as they are mostly itchy and sometimes in rare cases it can also develop in to skin infections. Heat rash is also a sign to say that your baby is overheating – something you should take very seriously as it can lead to heat related complications.

Heat rash is something that naturally disappears when the heat is reduced, but let’s not take even the slightest chance with your baby! Here are 4 easy steps to avoid heat rash!

1. Keep your baby cool!

Your baby needs to stay cool to avoid having a heat rash. Keep your baby in a shady area which is air conditioned or has a fan. If it’s getting too hot, its okay to keep your baby bare bodied.

2. Keep it loose and natural

Natural fibers have the capacity to breathe – which means that these clothes don’t trap heat. Loose fitting clothes with natural fibers are the best for babies – and avoid synthetic fibers at all costs. Another thing to avoid are plastic diapers – switch to cloth diapers at least during the heat season.

3. Hydrate!

Keep your baby hydrated with a lot of water and liquids. Lack of hydration in the body can lead to heat stroke, so its important to make sure that your baby is hydrated enough!

4. Keep the skin folds dry!

Areas with skin folds are most prone to heat rash, such as the neck and the crotch. Always keep these areas clean and dry, and apply prickly heat powder to avoid excess moisture in these regions.

Its always better to avoid heat rash. But, in the case of your baby suffering with heat rash, a Calamine based lotion or powder can help soothe the itching and the blisters. Apply calamine lotion or powder on the affected areas and help your baby cool down by taking off the clothes and keeping the baby in a cool, chilled place. Generally, heat rash disappears after a while. But if the symptoms persist, consult a doctor immediately.

How to Prevent Prickly Heat and Heat Rash

මෙම ළිපිය සිංහලෙන් කියවන්න

We have all been through the itchy discomfort of prickly heat at some point. Unseemly bumps on your skin with tiny blisters that makes your day a whole lot worse. Prickly heat and heat rash occurs due to sweat glands that are blocked. The trapped sweat, which cannot reach the surface of the skin to evaporate, then gets inflamed, giving you tiny little blisters and reddish skin which we call heat rash or prickly heat.

Although it’s quite common, especially amongst people who live in tropical countries like Sri Lanka, it is still a very irritating and uncomfortable condition. But, with a few simple steps, you can avoid heat rash and prickly heat!

5 steps to prevent heat rash!

Wear it loose

Tight clothing that does not give your skin room to breathe or does not allow for air circulation is a main reason why heat rash occurs. Choose to wear loose clothes, specially in hot and humid climates. With plenty of room for air to circulate, the probability of heat rash outbreaks will be significantly lower.

Cotton to the rescue

Natural fibers such as cotton or even linen have sweat absorbent properties, as well as being fabrics that “breathe”. This means that the fabric will allow for air circulation and absorb your excess sweat, keeping your body cool and sweat glands unblocked.

Magic of Calamine lotion

This is especially effective if you are already suffering with heat rash and prickly heat. Applying calamine lotion will help soothe your skin, relieving you of the rash and the discomfort. The healing properties of Calamine allows for this, and is a long-term solution for people who suffer with chronic heat rash.

Cleanliness matters!

When it’s especially hot and humid, be sure to keep yourself clean with frequent showers and baths. It is important to maintain the cleanliness of your skin when you know you will sweat a lot, to keep your sweat glands unclogged. Also, avoid the sun and the heat when it is hot and humid. Be sure to stay where its cooler, or in a place with air conditioning to avoid prickly heat.

Eat cool

Food and snacks that naturally cool your system such as watermelon, cucumber etc. can help avoid heat rash from the inside, by reducing the sweating. Avoid hot and spicy food that make you sweat, especially in the heat!

Heat rash generally disappears on its own when your body cools down. But, when it comes to heat rash, prevention is always better than cure. Its much easier to avoid the discomfort than to find a way to treat it. On hot and humid days, don’t forget to use a soft powder such as the Lacto Prickly Heat powder in areas that sweat a lot such as your under arms, and in places where the skin creases or where your clothes fit tightly. This will absorb the excess sweat, keeping your sweat glands unclogged.

Be comfortable, always!

Skin Whitening – The Myth

මෙම ළිපිය සිංහලෙන් කියවන්න

Fairness has always been considered as the ideal beauty standard every girl should aspire to achieve. It is generally considered that to be lovely and beautiful, you need to be fair. This attitude towards fair skin is something that has affected women since time immemorial, not simply as a beauty standard but also in important aspects of life such as relationships and employment. This focus on fairness is a predominantly Asian aspect, whilst Europeans with naturally fair skin, on the other hand, are eager to get ‘tan’.

So, what is it with this skin color? Why do some people have fair skin, and some have dark skin?

It’s all about melanin!

Let’s take a look at the world map.

You would have observed that people living in countries over the equator and close to the equator generally seem to have darker skin, than the people away from the equator. Being closer to the equator means that your skin is exposed to sunlight all over the year as opposed to seasonally, and extensive exposure to sunlight can lead to skin mutations such as cancer. To protect against this, the skin naturally produces what we call “Melanin”, the pigment that gives the skin its color and what protects our skin from harmful UV rays. When your sun exposure is high, your skin produces more melanin, and our genetic code remembers this, which is why most Africans, Asians and Arabs are considerably darker than Europeans. In short, having darker skin means that you are better protected from the harmful rays of the sun. And living in a tropical country like Sri Lanka, this is something we all need!

How fairness creams work

Although it is highly advantageous and even healthy to have dark skin, most women still aspire to achieve fair skin due to established beauty standards. The most popular method of achieving this fairness is of course, to use a fairness cream. However, do you know how fairness creams work?
All skin whitening creams function by inhibiting tyrosinase. This is a chemical that is required for the production of melanin in the skin. By restricting the production of melanin, these creams promise, and deliver on fairer skin to its users. However, some creams tend to include sun block agents into the cream to bypass the ill effects of restricting the production of melanin and thereby try to avoid the effects of UV rays on the skin, but most creams simply act as melanin restricting agents.
Overall, artificially restricting the production of a skin cell that protects you from the harmful UV rays of the sun, can result in a number of adverse effects in the long run such as skin mutations and a dependence on the whitening cream.

Well maintained, healthy skin = Beautiful skin

Every skin color is beautiful, be it dark or fair. Just make sure to take good care of your skin with a dedicated regime of using proper cleansing agents, regular exfoliation, not forgetting to use skin protection such as sun lotion and most importantly, giving your skin the nourishment it needs, with the use of a trusted moisturizer such as Calamine. Well maintained skin looks naturally even toned and more alive, which is a lot more important having fair but lifeless skin.

Fairness is NOT a marker of your beauty. Whatever the skin tone you have, you are beautiful just the way you are!

You wake up and see that bump on your face, and your whole day is ruined. Pimples have managed to ruin numerous special days for men and women alike, everywhere! And no matter what you do, there is no stopping them.

But why do we get pimples?

Pimples occur when the oil glands of the skin are infected by bacteria. Also known as the Sebaceous gland, an abnormality in these will result in a pimple break out.

The triggers for those abnormalities or infections differ from person to person. For some people, it’s the oiliness of their skin attracting the dust and filling up the oil glands with them. For some people it’s an allergic reaction to certain types of food such as dairy, chocolates or certain fruits. There are also many who have inherited pimples genetically , and some suffer with hormonal imbalances. Whichever the cause, it is important to first identify your individual pimple trigger, and be proactive about how you can avoid pimples. Life style changes such as a clean diet free of oil and fats, habits such as washing your face every 6 hours and avoiding direct contact with sunlight, using a clinically proven pore cleansing face wash etc. are some steps you can take to permanently get rid of pimples.

But these are long term solutions. What can you do when you have an important date and a pimple has decided to show up right in the middle of your face?

Here are 10 home remedies that will help you make those pimples disappear overnight!

1. Tomato juice

Dab your face with fresh tomato juice and leave it on for an hour before washing it off. Immediately apply some Lacto Lotion and go to sleep! Wake up to a well nourished, pimple free face!

2. Green tea ice cubes

A natural cleanser and full of anti oxidants, green tea ice cubes will shrink your pimples as well as give you clean and fresh skin. Prepare your favorite cup of green tea and make ice cubes out of it. Wrap a soft cloth around one cube and gently rub it over the pimple you want to get rid of. This is also great as a daily morning cleansing routine to make you feel fresh and alive!

Wash your face with a mild face wash and dab the pimples with Lacto Lotion – do not rub the cream in. Leave overnight and wake up to a pimple free face! Calamine comes with soothing and antiseptic properties that can clear your face of pimples and pimple scars. Daily use of Lacto Lotion can help control the excessive oiliness of your skin, thereby preventing pimples in the long run, and it is also great as a night cream that will replenish and nourish your skin overnight while keeping it pimple – free!

4. Coconut oil

5. Garlic

Mash 2 cloves of garlic and add a bit of water to form a paste. Apply over the affected area and wash off after 10 minutes. Garlic is full of antibacterial properties that will help reduce pimples, and this can be used as a weekly treatment to avoid pimples in the future. Don’t forget to dilute the natural garlic essence with water as on its own, it can be too harsh for the skin.

6. Lemon juice

Dip a cotton ball in undiluted lemon juice, and apply over the affected area before you go to sleep. Lemon juice comes with anti microbes that can kill the bacteria in your pimple, and it’s anti inflammatory nature will make your pimple go down in no time. Wash your face as usual in the morning and use a moisturizer.

5 Things You Need to Know Before You Send Your Children Outdoors

The outdoors is a great place to explore and learn about the little intricacies of life. Sending your little ones out is a great exposure in order for their mental and physical growth. Statistics state that playing outdoors is a great form of physical exercise that promotes child – well being and improves general health.

However, if you have chosen to let your children know the greater degree of life outside, its better to be equipped and gather knowledge to be on the more informed and safer side.

Here are five important things you should know before you send your children to explore the world outside.

  • Clothing

How your child is dressed and in what apparel they are clothed in plays an important role in their outdoor life. Weather is another factor which effects daily routine. If it’s in the tropics, its better to dress your child in clothes that are made out of cotton. The cotton clothing shall absorb the moisture of the sweat and keep your child fuss free.

If your child is more prone to get his or her clothing dirty, either due to vigorous play and activity, It is advisable to dress them in apparel that is more onto the darker shade. A darker shade will keep the dirty look minimized and would make an easier wash

  • Sun Lotion

If you happen to live in the tropics and in Asian countries, then this is a serious concern you should take into important consideration. Due to heavy pollution and harsh sun effects we need to keep ourselves more informed, when we send our kids out to play. A sun lotion is am important factor that plays a vital role in keeping your children safe and act as a screen. Apart from the concern with regards to complexion, the health effects due to direct exposure to the sun is indeed a worrying one. The acute and immediate effects of UV irradiation on sensitive human skin could vary between sunburn to inflammation erythema and tanning. This short term exposure may cause pain and itching, due to irritated skin.

Adults often tend to look after their skin due to a particular skin care regime, however children are overlooked and the effects of the detrimental exposure to direct sunlight is an alarming one.It is essential to choose a wise option to protect your kids from the sun before sending them out. There are many sunlotions in the market. However it is important to consider a good option when it comes to sunlotions. The factors that you may have to consider should be the SPF. SPF (sun protection factor) is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet (UV) B rays.

Make sure to apply the stated amount of sunlotion onto your children. One must choose a trusted skin care brand with a good name in the market before you make the purchase. You should be informed that a sun lotion which consists of an SPF rating tends to act as a shield that eliminates the effect of UV photons from touching skin and causing harsh damage. This may also depends on what type your skin (or your child’s skin) is, (sensitive/ oily/ tough/ rough) type and how exposed it may be towards burn. Always follow the careful instructions and follow the label. Any sunscreen lotion that consists of an SPF 50+ combines strong UVA and UVB filters that shield young and sensitive skin from sun damage with a caring formula. Use only the safest since children have tender skin

The benefits of using a good sun lotion on your children will reap the results later and will also help keeping away skin cancer. Did you know that Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the number one cause of any skin cancer. Children need to have adequate protection from the sun so choose a sunscreen that has the essential quotient of SPF 50 and a sun lotion that has UVA & UVB both.

  • Shoes and footwear

Apart from clothing and a good lotion an important factor that needs to be considered is proper shoes whilst sending your child outdoors. Choose from Footwear that is both durable and light for your child to wear. Make sure that they do not cause unnecessary discomfort or cuts that might effect the sensitive skin and cause callouses on the heels or the ankles. Choose footwear that does not have laces so that children don’t trip. Its best to look for shoes that have velcro straps that eliminate the hassle of shoe laces.

  • Stay hydrated

Adequate hydration is an essential factor that is often overlooked. Children tend to forget to drink water or juice, they even stay hungry for long periods of time. It’s best to ensure your child has adequate water and other juices to keep them hydrated before sending them out.

  • Mini snacks

Children hardly take care of their hunger, they tend to get grumpy. It is best to satisfy their occasional hunger pangs with mini bites that are healthy. Instead of junk food, do give them a small snack of freshly cut fruit or crackers before they head out.

Being Asians, the sun is an important part of our lives, make sure that when you send your children outdoors, they are always well protected. They are the beacon of our future and deserve only the best. We need to up our game in terms of protection with today’s outbreak of disease and pollution. Safeguarding them and providing them with safety is essential to ensure a rosy future!

Learn by Burn: 8 Ways to Treat Sunburn at Home

A downside of living in a tropical paradise is the constant glaring UV rays of the sun. No two people burn the same way, still over exposure to the sun causes premature aging and changes in the DNA that in turn causes cancer, known as Melanoma. In mild forms, they can be easily treated at home but for serious cases like blisters, swelling and dizziness a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Home Remedies to Relieve Sunburn

  • A very mild and soothing treatment for sunburns is baby wipes since they balance the PH levels. Don’t over use them in any case as that may reduce the natural oils that assist the healing process.
  • The fats and proteins contained in milk are ideal for skin that has started to peel after sunburn. During this time hydrating the skin is important which will be done by milk. If you are averse to the smell of milk you can use milk based products as a substitute.
  • Tea, our special favorite is fantastic to treat sunburn. You have to brew a pot of green or black tea and allow it to cool for hours. Once the tea has cooled you can soak a soft towel in it and use as a compress on the affected areas.
  • The soft soothing gel in the Aloe-Vera plant will soothe the irritated skin.  If you don’t have access to a plant you can use aloe ointments, but make sure that they don’t contain lanolin as they can irritate your skin and worsen the condition.
  • The cooling compounds in cucumber will soothe irritated and burned skin. You have to simply cut some slices and gently rub on the affected areas.
  • The probiotics in plain yogurt works wonders that helps to restore the natural barrier of the skin. You have to apply the cold yogurt on the affected area and sit it for 10 minutes. You can then gently dab it off with a cold cloth.
  • Mayonnaise is known for its cooling effects. The soothing oil in it is ideal for instant relief. You have to directly apply onto the burn but keep in mind that it is not a remedy for sunburn.

These quick and easy remedies are readily available and what more they actually work. Having said that the best way to protect yourself is by using a sun lotion SPF 15 or higher and there is no reason to not enjoy the sun.
